Housing Justice Center Stands with the Transgender Community

Today, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision refusing to prevent states from banning transgender children and adults from participating in sports on teams consistent with their gender identity. Housing Justice Center reaffirms its support of the trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming communities that enrich and strengthen our diverse nation. We remind the public that the Minnesota Human Rights Act continues to protect Minnesotans from discrimination on the basis of their gender identity in housing, education, public services, and other areas of civic life. See Minn. Stat. § 363A.09 (housing); Minn. Stat. § 363A.13 (education); Minn. Stat. § 363A.12 (public services). Many cities have also enacted protections for trans residents, such as Minneapolis’ prohibitions on gender identity-based discrimination in public services, accommodations, and more. See MCO § 139.40.

The Supreme Court’s decision is one of the many recent attacks on our trans kids, neighbors, friends, and peers. We will not allow this setback to diminish our state’s commitment to protecting all Minnesotans, especially those whose lives and dignity are threatened by regressive policies.
