The Issue of Maturing Subsidized Mortgages
When federally assisted mortgages providing housing for lower income households mature, income restrictions, rent limitations, and tenant protections are lost for those units not covered by a Section 8 contract (53% of the units with mortgages expiring in the next five years and 44% of those with mortgages expiring over the next ten years).  The owners’ incentive to retain Section 8 contracts may be lost as well.
